Faye Knowles is working to fight hunger and provide food to people who are in need.

For the last decade, Knowles has strived to help others at the Food Bank of the Albemarle.

“I like helping people,” said Knowles. “I am a people person.”

Knowles said she first began working at the Food Bank of the Albemarle in a part-time position. Now Knowles serves as the customer service/receiving agent for the organization.

Knowles said during the last 10 years she has witnessed an increase in the number of people who have needed to use the Food Bank of the Albemarle.

“It is a greater need,” said Knowles. “When I first worked here it wasn’t as large.”

Knowles coordinates with partner agencies in Beaufort, Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Hyde, Martin, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell and Washington counties.

Monetary and food donations are always welcome, according to Knowles. One dollar donated to the Food Bank of the Albemarle provides the equivalent of four meals to people in need.

Knowles said many area organizations hold food drives to donate items collected to the Food Bank of the Albemarle.

Volunteer opportunities are also available at the Food Bank of the Albemarle. Knowles said people interested in volunteering should complete the online volunteer application at https://afoodbank.org/give-back/volunteer/.

Originally from Elizabeth City, Knowles enjoys spending time with her family, cooking and reading. She is a member of Zeta Amicae Auxiliary of Camden. Knowles is also a member of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church where she sings in the choir.

Prior to working at the Food Bank of the Albemarle, Knowles said she was a resident security officer at Elizabeth City State University and she worked with the Kids Cafe after school program.

“It is very rewarding to know that I have some impact for people in need,” said Knowles.

Knowles said the best aspect of her job at the Food Bank of the Albemarle is “helping people” and “making sure they are not hungry.”
