Helping her students achieve balance through movement, Patti Mordecai offers a variety of yoga classes at Arts and Wellness of Edenton.
“Our philosophy is we teach the whole person,” said Mordecai.
Mordecai said she strives to help her students “find a restful position” during restorative yoga classes.
“Restorative yoga is about using breath and postures with bolsters to support the body,” said Mordecai.
During these classes, participants can hold postures for at least 10 minutes. Mordecai said the postures allow students to relax.
Mordecai also teaches a gentle yoga movement class which she says is a “great class for beginners.”
Mordecai said her classes begin with a quiet and restful meditation. She then transitions to different poses like the “sun salutation.” Students also learn standing, balancing and seated postures. Mordecai concludes classes by having students lie with their backs to the floor in a relaxed savasana position.
Mordecai co-owns Arts and Wellness of Edenton with Mary Gilliam, who teaches a wide variety of classes, including ballroom dancing, tai chi, yoga, ballet, pointe and tap. Gilliam danced professionally with the Fort Worth Ballet, and she’s the wife of the rector at St. Paul’s Church in Edenton where Mordecai is an active member.
Mordecai said classes are available at Arts and Wellness of Edenton for all ages.
“There is joyful movement in all of the classes,” she said. “We accept students all year long.”
Mordecai said pre-registration is not necessary and drop-in rates are available.
Originally from Kinston, Mordecai earned her bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in journalism from North Carolina State University.
She began taking yoga classes more than two decades ago.
“I felt more connected than any exercise I had done,” Mordecai said. “The mind-body part struck me. I realized going to yoga, I had a toolkit to handle stress and anxiety.”
Mordecai completed training to become a yoga teacher at Blue Lotus in Raleigh. She received kids yoga teacher training at Little Guru Kids Yoga in Raleigh. She also completed training in yoga for cancer patients at Duke Integrative Medicine.
Mordecai began teaching yoga classes in 2012 and opened Arts and Wellness of Edenton in 2016.
Mordecai lives in Edenton and enjoys spending time with her husband, Julien, and their children, Wood, Beatrice and Harris.
