Accomplishing a lifelong dream to own her own gym, Kim Wolff opened River City Gymnastics in Elizabeth City last month.

Wolff offered her first class at her new business at 401 South Griffin Street in July.

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Wolff took gymnastics classes and competed from age 6 to 14.

“Once you get into it, it gets into your blood,” she said.

She fondly recalls attending gymnastics classes with her sister growing up.

Years later she watched her own two daughters discover their own passion for the sport. It convinced her to coach gymnastics.

“I like the structure and discipline it teaches children,” she said.

While Wolff had coached gymnastics for close to two decades, she had never owned her own gym.

“It was always a dream of mine to do it,” she said.

Wolff moved with her husband, who is employed at the U.S. Coast Guard Base in Elizabeth City, to Camden in June 2018. It was after moving here that she decided to open River City Gymnastics.

So far, she’s been wowed by the response.

“The reception here has been amazing,” Wolff said. “The parents and children have been wonderful.”

At River City Gymnastics, Wolff offers a variety of classes to students between the ages of 18 months and 10. Classes start at the beginner’s level.

Each class begins with a warm-up followed by a concentration on three events. The events alternate between vault, floor, bars and beam. The classes conclude with 5 minutes of fun games that incorporate things like ribbon sticks, parachutes and tumble track.

Besides learning the proper techniques, Wolff’s students also learn the correct gymnastics terminology.

In addition to regularly scheduled classes, Wolff also offers special events like Preschool Open Gym and Parents Night Out.

Wolff said one of the best parts of coaching gymnastics is watching a child work hard to develop a skill and the happiness on their face when they accomplish their goal.

“Watching a child grow is just incredible,” she said.
