Foundation grant pays for bus internet access

The Perquimans County Schools Foundation recently announced a $2,000 grant by Albemarle Community Trust to pay for Internet wifi connectivity on all activity buses operated by Perquimans County Schools.

“The ‘hot-spots’ which provide the connectivity were purchased last year with grant dollars from Albemarle Community Trust,” said Foundation Executor Brenda Lassiter. “This is a continuation of being able to provide services and resources for our students and student athletes.”

All students are issued a technology tool at the beginning of the year and all schools are wireless, ensuring students have access to use that specific digital device throughout the entire school day. However, when students leave on a bus to travel to athletic events or field trips, digital access is no longer available for students until they arrive at their designated location or until they arrive back home. The grant will allow connectivity specific to the school-issued digital device so that students can continue to study, work on lessons and submit homework assignments during travel time to and from games, events or places.

The Albemarle Community Trust is funded by Albemarle Electric Membership Corporation members who voluntarily contribute to the trust through their power bills. ACT grant applications are reviewed by a volunteer board of directors. Each year the trust gives out those dollars to fund projects that benefit the community.
