Check 2016 return: Senate bill will hike taxes
Thursday, November 23, 2017
Regarding the tax bill now being considered by the U.S. Senate that is much ballyhooed as tax relief for the middle class: I got out our 2016 tax return and replaced our itemized deductions with the new $24,400 standard deduction, and I replaced our personal exemptions with the new zero personal exemption.
The result was a tax increase of $794.
We are a retired special education teacher and a semi-retired college professor; I don't know who could be more middle class than we are. Americans need to know that Republicans found their talking points about tax "reform" in a horse paddock.
I encourage everyone to perform the same experiment with their 2016 tax return (it took me about five minutes) and call, email, or write to Sens. Richard Burr and Thom Tillis with the result, as I have done.
