Farm Fresh sale limits choice

Having read the article in your paper about Food Lion buying the Farm Fresh store on Hughes Boulevard, I agree with at least two of the people interviewed by your reporter in the article. Elizabeth City does not need another Food Lion; we absolutely do need more variety of grocery stores. One of the other stores mentioned in other papers’ articles would be much better for the area to give us some variety.

Having lived almost 64 years in eastern Pennsylvania, I miss the grocery stores with more square footage. I would love to see a Weis Markets or Redner’s Warehouse Markets come to town. Even a Giant or Shop Rite would be welcome. All of those stores are at least 55,000 square feet, and Weis Markets will not build a store that is less than 60,000 square feet. This gives space for more variety in products.

Right now, we have to shop between Walmart, Farm Fresh and Food Lion to purchase all of the items we want. And no, I do not want to see a Wegman’s at over 100,000 square feet. We need more variety, which produces competition and results in lower prices. I have seen that in many instances in my old area. Sometimes stores in the same chain have different prices based on their competition in the area of that store.
