Parker should vote to break council ties
Monday, April 16, 2018
Mayor Bettie Parker is our only local elected official who received votes from all four city wards in the October election. In fact, she earned almost three times as many votes as any member of city council.
She is also the face of our fair city. Click on Elizabeth City’s website and you’ll find a warm welcome letter from our mayor. Attend any local event, and chances are Mayor Parker will be in attendance. She is well-informed on all city issues and respected and trusted by many residents.
For these reasons, I urge her to exercise her right to vote when City Council is deadlocked on an agenda item. Her recent decision to not vote to break a tie was not appropriate. In the case of future council deadlocks, Mayor Parker should cast her vote, and explain her reason(s). That is a unique, and sometimes critical, part of her leadership role within council and our little city.
I’d thank our Madam Mayor for her service!
