Gardner hits mark on reasons parents choose to home-school
Wednesday, May 23, 2018
After having five children in the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools almost continuously since 1990, my husband and I made the difficult decision to withdraw our youngest child last month from his elementary school and home-school him.
In Doug Gardner’s column in the May 20 edition, “Finding money for teachers will entail hard choices,” he invites teachers that marched for education last week to knock on doors to find out why families in this area have removed 2,200 of their children from the public school system to home-school them.
Mr. Gardner’s opinion that many parents have given up on public education very accurately describes our family’s reason to home-school at this time. We, like many who choose alternative forms of education, have stories to tell. I just wonder if anyone in the school system really cares to listen.
