Dems setting bar too high in choice of candidates
Sunday, December 2, 2018
You've heard it said that art sometimes imitates life. Never were truer words spoken than in the “Born Loser” cartoon strip last Sunday.
In the cartoon, Fred and Brutus meet at the bus stop where Brutus opens up about Fred's love life. “Still dating the gal you've been raving about?” Brutus asks. Fred grumbles that the woman dumped him. He then says he's sick of all the attractive and intelligent ladies that keep dumping him. From now on he'll be looking for dumb, ugly women who aren't fun to be with. In his comeback, Brutus tells Fred that there's no guarantee that a woman like that wouldn't dump him, too. To which Fred replies: “Yeah, but if she did, I wouldn't care!”
Coupling this with someone calling the president a Mafia boss last week makes me think that the Democrats — like Fred in the “Born Loser” comic — need to wake up to reality and face the fact that picking only attractive, glib-talking eye-candy candidates may be setting the bar too high. Maybe they should be going for candidates like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez instead. She doesn’t have sense enough to find an apartment in Washington but she got elected anyhow.
The era of Clintonian eye-rolling gesturing and slurring your opponent as “deplorables” may be over. The threats of incivility and resistance only serve to harden the resolve of Republicans to react in a like manner.
