It has been said that life is short, so it is good to be alert and to slow down a bit. Well, that statement is all too true when it comes to maneuvering traffic in and around Elizabeth City.

I was driving near the Camden bridge just the other day when a semi-truck decided to make a lane change — with my vehicle right beside it! I narrowly avoided disaster but the incident left me so shaken I had to pull over and calm down.

Now, I know that life is hectic. You have to get from point A to point B. But please listen: You do not have to kill yourself doing it. We can all take a few moments to be alert and most importantly, safe.

It all starts when you think about what is truly important. That makes you alert and that alertness can be lifesaving.
