The headline in the morning paper noting College of The Albemarle’s graduating class of 435, causes me to reflect on other days at COA.

I recall the summer of 1961 when the board of trustees was struggling, pleading and begging for enough high school graduates to give us our first freshman class of 100 students. We made it. I seem to recall we ended up with 102.

One board member even suggested that someday, in the distant future, we might have as many as 300 or 350 in our student body. At the time, that seemed unrealistic.

It turned out well.
