America needs to return to what Lazarus envisioned
Saturday, September 21, 2019
Emma Lazarus was a young Jewish immigrant from Brazil who wrote the poem “The New Colossus” which was inscribed on the Statue of Liberty.
It plays on my mind a little bit these days that if little Emma were trying to present herself for asylum today in Trump’s America, she might find herself in a cage without soup or toothpaste crying for her mom and dad.
The American story has always been about reaching out and not about building walls. It has always had the reputation of having the high ground. So, hopefully, she’ll have that reputation again in 17 months. I mark the calendar day by day.
God save our generous America.
