It’s been called America’s greatest race. The run for the roses. The greatest two minutes in sports. Whatever you call it, the 144th Kentucky Derby is set to run May 5, and the Museum of the Albemarle’s Portico is the place to experience it!!

The fun begins at 5 p.m., with mint juleps and appetizers, as hat-clad ladies and dapper gentlemen mix and mingle in anticipation of the race. Each attendee gets one free mint julep. A cash bar will offer additional mint juleps, plus beer, wine and soft drinks.

Two large-screen televisions will broadcast the Derby. Betting is not allowed, but there is still a chance to win with the Pick-A-Pony drawing. Each attendee will draw a horse-shaped lollypop with the number of a racehorse attached. If you draw the number of the Derby winner, you win a prize!

And what would a Kentucky Derby party be without a hat contest? Winning hats will be chosen in six categories. “Classy and Sassy” will honor the most elegant hat, while “Artsy Fartsy” will recognize the most creative topper. “Hot to Trot” will choose the sexiest hat, and “Triple Crown” will recognize the biggest one. The best men’s hat will fill the “Dashing and Debonair” category. “Two Toppers” will honor the couple with the best hats. Winners will receive a prize and a satin sash.

After the race, attendees will enjoy a barbecue buffet dinner with all the fixings, catered by Bob-B-Q. The evening will culminate with a dance. DJ Taz will spin the tunes as everyone takes to the dance floor.

Tickets are available on the Museum of the Albemarle’s website and Facebook page. They can also be purchased in person at the museum. Don’t miss this fun event as Museum of the Albemarle celebrates one of America’s greatest sporting traditions.
