Do you smell the french fries yet?

It’s N.C. Potato Festival weekend in Elizabeth City and folks from Pasquotank County and across the region are gathering in the city’s downtown district to celebrate an important specialty crop for the area.

The festival seems to get bigger every year and the preparations — the obvious, visible ones, that is — begin a full week ahead of the event itself.

We have been watching rides being assembled this week and you might have noticed some streets were closed early in the week. Flyers and posters about the festival are everywhere and we have been doing some advance coverage here at The Daily Advance.

The other day colleague Chris Day was talking to me about the Wienermobile and how he’s looking forward to seeing it this weekend.

Count me in for the Wienermobile, too.

I missed the Giant Idaho Spud when it made its appearance and the potato festival and I really wish I had seen it. Since I don’t want to go through similar remorse regarding the Wienermobile, I’ll have to be sure to set aside some time to get by and see it.

The music is always entertaining. Elizabeth City is fortunate to get a good variety of talented local, regional and up-and-coming national performers to take the stage during the Potato Festival.

The younger crowd, and maybe some young at heart, have a great time on the rides. I stopped riding amusement rides when I realized I had to take motion sickness medicine hours in advance in order to have a chance at pulling it off successfully.

That just seems like way more anxiety than ought to be necessary for something that is supposed to be fun.

And of course it is fun for those not-so-motion-sickness challenged.

Children, in particular, seem to have a special gift for enjoying the rides without the unpleasant side effects.

This year I won’t even make any promises to myself about eating healthy this weekend because I know I’ll blow it at some point during the festival. It’s one of those times when you just have to give yourself a pass.

It’s a good opportunity to get in a lot of walking.

I also enjoy seeing people I might not have seen in a while. That always seems to happen at some point during the festival.

People are in a good mood, too.

And did I mention the french fries?

Yeah, and the Wienermobile will be there.
