Food Bank of the Albemarle's "Dine Out to Help Out" fundraiser returns next week, an event that encourages local residents to eat out to help ensure their neighbors don't go hungry.

On Tuesday, about 70 restaurants across northeastern North Carolina will donate 10 percent of their revenues from that day's sales to Food Bank of the Albemarle, food bank spokesman Brian Gray explained Thursday. That's 14 more restaurants than participated last year, he noted.

Some of the participating restaurants include Highway 55 and Uncle Chuck's Soul Food Cafe, both in Elizabeth City, The 51 House in Edenton, and Eagle Creek Bar and Grill and Giordano's Pizza House, both in Currituck County.

The strong support has led the food bank to set a higher fundraising goal from this year’s event, at $20,000, Gray said. A food bank press release notes that every $1 the food bank receives can provide four meals to someone in need.

"The funds raised through this hunger-relief effort will provide nutritious food to thousands of people in need," food bank Executive Director Liz Reasoner said in the release.

Gray also encouraged people to let restaurants know they are dining out because of the food bank, though it's not necessary to do so for their meal to count toward donations. In one caveat, he said those who dine at the Chick-fil-A in Elizabeth City need to tell their cashier they want their meal counted for Dine Out.

Gray also said that two participating restaurants will donate a share of sales from days other than Tuesday next week. The Paradiso Roma Ristorante on the Camden Causeway will donate a share of its Monday sales, while The Clubhouse Restaurant at Albemarle Plantation in Perquimans County will donate a share of its Wednesday sales, he said.

Gray thanked the restaurants for their support, noting the Food Bank decided on Tuesdays when it started the fundraiser in 1995 because Tuesdays are typically slow for restaurants.

The food bank's press release also recognized the two restaurants that have raised the most money through the event, earning a "Platinum Spoon Award." They are Sam and Omie's Restaurant and Awful Arthur's Oyster Bar, both in Dare County. He declined to say exactly how much they've raised.

Gray also said food bank staffers plan to eat out quite a bit on Tuesday, with some planning to dine out for every meal.

Food Bank of the Albemarle provides nutritious food to food-insecure families across 15 counties and distributes food through 140 non-profit/faith-based organizations, according to its press release.
