EDENTON — Two hundred-fifty people are expected to participate in the Edenton-Chowan Food Pantry’s annual Walk for Hunger on Sunday.

Food Pantry Director Roger Coleman said Chowan County residents of all ages may participate in the walk, which raises money to help fight food insecurity in Chowan County.

“The two-mile walk through Edenton will meander through the historic district beginning and ending at Colonial Park,” Coleman said. “We anticipate 250 participants with teams of walkers from area churches, businesses and civic groups.”

Registration begins at Colonial Park at 1:30 with the walk following from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

“Trophies will be awarded to the Most Spirited Team and Biggest Fundraising Team,” said event chairwoman MaryScott Haigler. Each team will keep their trophy until next year's walk, she said.

Amanda Howell, chairwoman of the walk’s fundraising committee, said the event will feature music to boost walkers as they get underway.

“The fabulous DJ Eddie and Melissa will be playing music at the start of the race,” she said.

The pair are perhaps best known from their Vinyl Night shows at Edenton Bay Trading Company.

“We are also going to have musicians all along the course,” Haigler said.

Other attractions will include a bouncy house and snow cones.

“We're aiming for an afternoon of fun,” Haigler said.

Participants don’t need to be extremely fast walkers to join in the walk, she said.

“It's about fun, not a finish line,” Haigler said.

Bicycles and wagons are also welcome to join the event.

Walk T-shirts for children will be for sale for $15; adult T-shirts will cost $20. All those who make donations will receive a keepsake bracelet from the event.

Walk organizers are grateful to the event’s eight corporate sponsors, Haigler said.

Proceeds from the event will be used to support the Book Bag Buddies program in the Edenton-Chowan Schools and the Food Pantry’s work on behalf of local families in need of food-related assistance.

To make a monetary donation, address checks to: Edenton-Chowan Food Pantry, PO Box 643, Edenton, NC 27932. For more information about Sunday’s Walk for Hunger, call Haigler at 482-4785 or email her at maryscotthaigler@gmail.com.
