Cavalcades of Christmas cheer heralded the season Saturday in well-attended parades in Elizabeth City, Hertford and South Mills.

With more than 100 entrants on a cool but dry December night, the Elizabeth City Christmas parade proved a big hit. People packed both sides of the parade route from Ehringhaus Street winding through downtown Elizabeth City to see how various groups made this year’s theme of “A Storybook Christmas” their own.

Piedmont Natural Gas crews responded Monday afternoon to a natural gas leak that closed North Road Street to northbound traffic for nearly four hours.

The leak apparently happened on North Road Street near the railroad crossing where final construction work is underway on the Knobbs Creek bridges.

Elizabeth City Mayor Joe Peel won re-election to a third term on Tuesday, overcoming a challenge from Sam Davis III.

Peel won five of the city’s seven precincts, collecting 1,317 votes or 53.63 percent to Davis’ 1,148 votes and 46.52 percent.

Peel also bested Davis in early voting, collecting 954 early votes to Davis’ 775.

Total citywide turnout for Tuesday’s election was 19.65 percent.
