Elizabeth City police say a local man was shot in the shoulder by an unknown assailant as he drove through the Hines Avenue area Wednesday night.

Arago Harrell, 31, of the 100 block of Native Dancer Court, suffered the non-life threatening gunshot wound as he was driving his 1998 Chevy Tahoe in the area of Lafayette and Graves avenues about 9 p.m. Wednesday, Lt. Larry D. James said.

Harrell, whose right shoulder was grazed in the attack, was treated at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center and was expected to be released soon, James said late Wednesday night.

A reporter snapped a photo of Harrell’s abandoned SUV, its front and rear doors open, in front of a residence on Hines Avenue Monday night.

James asked anyone who can assist the police investigation to call the Elizabeth City Police Department at 335-4321 or the Elizabeth City Crime Line at 335-5555. All information received will remain anonymous and strictly confidential, James said.
