EDENTON — Two Chowan County men are in custody following a chase with law enforcement officers Friday that ended with their arrest in Bertie County.

Edenton police Chief Jay Fortenbery said the chase began after police officers tried to stop a vehicle on Badham Road because one of the occupants was a person of interest in an ongoing police investigation.

“The vehicle refused to stop and fled from authorities,” Fortenbery said. “The chase continued down Broad Street to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and on to (U.S.) Highway 17 where the suspects fled into Bertie County.”

After the vehicle stopped, the driver, Tykavis Requan Melton, 19, of Sandy Terrace Road, Edenton, was arrested and charged with felony speeding to elude arrest and multiple traffic violations. He was released after posting a $5,500 bond. A passenger, Dremale Vanterpool, 18, of 2125 John Hill Lane, was charged with littering.

A second passenger in the vehicle was not charged, Fortenbery said.

Assisting in the chase and the two suspects’ arrest were deputies with the Chowan and Bertie sheriff’s offices and troopers with the N.C. Highway Patrol, he said.
