EDENTON — Charges are pending following the death of an Edenton man in a traffic accident in Chowan County Saturday afternoon, the N.C. Highway Patrol said Monday.
Leon Basnight, 59, was killed after his pickup collided head-on with a car on N.C. Highway 32 about 5:30 p.m., Trooper K.R. Briggs said.
According to Briggs, Daniel Hurdle Jr., 25, of Edenton, was driving a 2011 Toyota Camry north on N.C. 32 and Basnight was driving a 1989 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck south on the roadway. As Hurdle was trying to pass another vehicle, he realized Basnight’s pickup was headed in his direction, Briggs said. Hurdle’s Camry ran off the road to the left, came back onto the road and collided head-on with Basnight’s pickup, Briggs said.
Basnight was pronounced dead at the scene, Briggs said.
Hurdle was taken to Vidant Chowan Hospital and later was transferred to Vidant Mdical Center in Greenville, Briggs said.
Both vehicles were destroyed in the crash, which occurred just north of Valhalla and about six miles north of Edenton, Briggs reported.
