SOUTH MILLS — An elderly Camden County man was killed late Sunday afternoon when his bicycle was struck on U.S. Highway 17, authorities said Monday.

Aubrey Lee Lewis, 81, of Keeter Barn Road, died after he was struck from behind by a Ford sedan, according to published reports quoting Trooper T.F. Langley of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Attempts to reach Langley on Monday were unsuccessful. The trooper told several other media outlets, however, that a vehicle driven by Ashley Vereen, 33, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, struck Lewis as he was pedaling south on U.S. 17.

Camden Sheriff Tony Perry said his office received a call about the accident Sunday at 5:24 p.m. and that Camden deputies assisted at the scene.

Perry said he didn’t know the victim’s name, but his information is that he had riding his bicycle on Keeter Barn Road and had just turned south onto U.S. 17 when he was struck by a vehicle.

Pasquotank-Camden Emergency Medical Services officials said they found the man’s body on the side of U.S. 17. They said it appeared the man had suffered multiple traumatic injuries.
