Food Lion’s recall of pre-cooked, deli department chicken tenders because of an undeclared milk ingredient on packaging labels affects five area Food Lion stores.

A spokeswoman for the Salisbury-based grocer said Tuesday the reason for the recall is to protect customers allergic to dairy products.

The products being recalled include four-count, eight-count and 12-count Homestyle Chicken Tenders and the Chicken Tender Party Platter.

The area Food Lion stores affected by the recall include the Elizabeth City store on Weeksville Road, three stores in Currituck — Moyock, Grandy and Corolla — and the store in Edenton.

The product is isolated to the deli department, the spokeswoman said.

The product can be sold in hot varieties with a sell-by date of Oct. 16 or cold varieties with a purchase date on or before Oct. 17 or sell-by date of Oct. 16 through Oct. 20.

The recall affects 129 Food Lion stores in North Carolina, 105 stores in Virginia and two in West Virginia.

Customers with allergies to dairy products are advised to dispose of the products targeted for the recall or return them to any Food Lion location for a full refund. Customers may contact Food Lion's Customer Support Center at 1-800-210-9569.
