SOUTH MILLS — A 33-year-old Virginia woman has been charged in connection with a fatal traffic collision Sunday that claimed the life of an elderly man riding his bicycle on U.S. Highway 17.
Ashly Michelle Vereen, of the 500 block of Edwin Drive, Virginia Beach, was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle following the death of 81-year-old Aubrey Lee Lewis, Trooper T.F. Langley of the N.C. Highway Patrol said Wednesday. Vereen, who also is charged with failure to maintain lane control, is due in Camden District Court on the charges Dec. 1, Langley said.
Vereen was driving south on U.S. 17 shortly before 5:30 p.m. when her 2007 Ford Focus approached Lewis, who was pedaling in the same direction on a narrow strip of asphalt, just to the right of the highway’s white line.
According to Langley, Vereen veered off the highway at the intersection of U.S. 17 and Keeter Barn Road and struck Lewis’ bicycle from behind.
Langley said Vereen told him she heard a loud noise and felt an impact. She and a passenger in her car said they at first thought the car had hit a deer, Langley said.
Langley said witnesses told him that Lewis, who lived on Keeter Barn Road, had regularly ridden in his bike in the area.
According to Lewis’ obituary, he was a master carpenter. A memorial service for Lewis is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday at Peoples Baptist Church. Burial will be in Moyock Memorial Cemetery. Twiford Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements.
