The Greater Albemarle Area Chapter of the American Red Cross needs volunteers to help respond to crises such as house fires and hurricanes, and it’s willing to train those who are interested in signing up.

Starting later this week, a free disaster volunteer training boot camp will be held.

The training will include a three-course series to teach volunteers the role of the Red Cross, as well as how volunteers work alongside clients, first-responders and partner organizations. Class attendees will also participate in a disaster simulation drill.

Classes will be held at the Greater Albemarle American Red Cross headquarters at 1409 Parkview Drive, Elizabeth City on Friday from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attendance is required all three days.

After the completion of the training, the volunteers will be certified to participate as members of a Red Cross Disaster Action Team.
