Two students have been charged in connection with a fight at Northeastern High School on Tuesday that sent a third student to the hospital for medical treatment.

Arnold White and Jaquay Hassell were charged in the incident, Pasquotank Sheriff Randy Cartwright said in a press release Wednesday.

White, 17, of the 1300 block of Normal Ave., Elizabeth City, is charged with assault inflicting serious injury. Hassell, 16, of the 1400 block of River Road, is charged with disorderly conduct and disrupting an education environment.

According to Cartwright, sheriff’s Deputy Anthony Alexander, a school resource officer, responded to a fight in the area near the school cafeteria around 2 p.m. After calling for additional law enforcement to respond to the school, Alexander took White and Hassell into custody.

A third student who was injured in the fight was transported to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center where he was treated and released, Cartwright said. The student was not identified in Cartwright’s press release.

Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools spokeswoman Tammy Sawyer said Wednesday that no weapon was involved in the fight. She also said the incident was not gang-related.

Sawyer confirmed that the high school sent a call to parents Wednesday stating an “unfortunate incident” on the campus Tuesday “affected many of our students” and that the safety of staff and students remains a priority.

“We have put additional measures in place to make sure there are no additional activities stemming from yesterday,” the call to parents continued. “You will see additional personnel on campus to ensure we are transitioning back to our normal routine.”

Both White and Hassell were transported to Albemarle District Jail where White was being held in lieu of a $20,000 secured bond and Hassell in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond. White is due in Pasquotank District Court on Friday. Hassell is due in court on Jan. 22.
