HERTFORD — For the second year in a row, a teacher in the Perquimans County Schools has been named the region’s top teacher.
Kaley Kiffner, a science teacher at Perquimans County Middle School, found out she had been named Regional Teacher of the Year on Thursday. Kiffner won the award over teachers in 20 school districts in 17 counties in the northeast region.
Kiffner was surprised with the news during a school assembly that had been billed as an event to honor Perquimans County Middle School’s successful sports teams.
On hand for the assembly was Lisa Godwin of Onslow County, this year’s state Teacher of the Year. To keep news of Kiffer’s selection for the regional honor a secret, Godwin was dressed in the PCMS Tiger mascot outfit, complete with the Tiger head.
As part of the surprise, the event featured a game where teachers had to pin a carrot on a snowman. When Kiffner’s name was picked for the game, she had to put on a blindfold. After she did so, top school officials, Parker and Kiffner’s husband, Randy, and son, William, emerged from a back room.
When her blindfold was removed, Kiffner saw them all lined up at center court with a banner proclaiming her as the region’s Teacher of the Year.
“Mrs. Kiffner is the best science teacher in the state,” said PCMS Principal Laura Moreland.
She pointed to the fact that 86 percent of Kiffner’s students last year rated as proficient on state testing.
Kiffner is the second Perquimans school teacher to win the regional teacher award in as many years. Hertford Grammar School’s Amy Parker won the award last year, the same year Hertford Grammar Principal Jason Griffin went on to win the Principal of the Year for the state.
This is not the first time a school district has won back-to-back regional teacher of the year honors. The Edenton-Chowan Schools did it when Sonya Rinehart repeated the win after James Bell won. Reinhart won in 2008-09. Bell went on to win the state Teacher of the Year Award.
