Fire destroyed a building at the Big Bucks Recycling facility on Old Foreman Bundy Road Saturday afternoon.

Todd Winslow, a battalion chief with the Elizabeth City Fire Department, said the building was engulfed in flames — and the roof had already given way — when firefighters arrived around 4:45 p.m. Firefighters from Elizabeth City, the N.C. Forest Service and rural volunteer fire departments including Nixtonton, Providence and Inter-County quickly suppressed the fire.

The building contained recyclable materials but Winslow said information about specific contents would have to come from the owner. The Daily Advance was not immediately able to speak with the owner of the business Saturday.

The Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fire and had not determined its cause at presstime.

Sheriff Randy Cartwright said investigators were on the scene quickly and took photographs of the fire but would not be able to examine the scene more closely until metals and other materials cooled down.
