A motorist is facing several traffic citations after her pickup truck collided with the rear of a stopped school bus in Elizabeth City early Friday morning.

Deanna Evans, who was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, was cited for driving while license revoked and failure to reduce speed, according to Sgt. Lamont Butts.

At least 10 students aboard the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools bus were transported to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center for medical evaluations following the collision, Tammy Sawyer, a school spokeswoman, said. All 10 were treated and released, she said.

Sawyer said Bus 192 was transporting students to Pasquotank High School shortly before 8 a.m. when it stopped at the railroad tracks on North Road Street as required by state law.

As the bus was stopped in the roadway near Robert Sawyer’s Service Station, it was rear-ended by a pickup truck, Sawyer said.

According to Butts, Evans failed to see the stopped school bus and collided with the bus’ rear.

While 10 students were taken to the hospital for medical evaluations, the remainder of the 20 students aboard the bus were transported to their school, Sawyer said.

“The Elizabeth City Police Department is still conducting a thorough investigation,” Butts said.
