CURRITUCK — A former Currituck County commissioner who left office to become a magistrate is hoping to return to the county’s governing board.
Kevin McCord, a Republican, filed to run in his party’s May primary for the at-large seat now held by Commissioner Mike Hall. Hall, a Republican completing his first four-year term, has already filed for re-election.
McCord, 43, had been a Currituck deputy for about 11 years when he won election to a seat on the Currituck Board of Commissioners in November 2012. McCord resigned from his commission seat in 2014, however, to take a job as a Currituck magistrate.
In the summer of 2015, McCord left his position as a magistrate and rejoined the Currituck Sheriff's Office.
The winner of the GOP primary will face Joe Payne, a Democrat who filed for the seat, in the November election.
