CURRITUCK — A former bookkeeper for a Currituck company has been arrested and charged with embezzling more than $23,000 while working for the firm, court records show.
Nancy Phelps Gaskins, 46, of the 300 block of North Spot Road, is charged with 13 counts of embezzling from Blue Water Restoration, Currituck District Court records state.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Matt Beickert said Thursday that Blue Water’s management contacted the Currituck Sheriff’s Office on Sunday about discrepancies in the firm’s accounts. Blue Water Restoration, located on Caratoke Highway a couple of miles south of Grandy, specializes in restoration work to buildings damaged by fire, mold, water or wind.
Beickert said a deputy went to the business and sat down and interviewed Gaskins. He said Gaskins was forthcoming and confessed that she had embezzled from the company. Gaskins was subsequently arrested and taken to the sheriff's office, he said.
Arrest warrants accuse Gaskins of embezzling from Blue Water Restoration between Aug. 11, 2017 and Feb. 16. The most Gaskins is accused of taking at one time was $2,850 on Nov. 17, the warrants state.
Gaskins also embezzled $2,775 on Oct. 20, $2,632 on Sept. 8, $2,428 on Jan. 12 and $2,150 on Oct. 6, the warrants state.
Beickert said the department’s probe of the alleged embezzlement is continuing.
Gaskins, who was released on a $5,000 secured bond, is due in Currituck District Court on Monday.
