MANTEO — A Currituck County man facing drug-trafficking charges has also been charged with second-degree murder following the apparent drug-overdose death of a man he’s accused of supplying heroin.
Tyrique Lazara Wise, 32, of the 100 block of Newbern Road, Jarvisburg, was arrested following the apparent drug-overdose death of a 40-year-old man in Wanchese on Monday, Dare Sheriff's Capt. Kevin Duprey said.
According to Duprey, a report came in just after 3 p.m. on Monday that a man was suffering from cardiac arrest at a residence in the 1000 block of E.R. Daniels Road. Duprey said emergency officials pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Duprey said a second reported overdose, this one involving a 22-year-old woman, had been reported at the same residence more than two hours earlier.
Duprey said Dare emergency medical services personnel treated the woman at the house before transporting her to Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head, where she was treated and released.
Duprey declined to release the names of the man who died or the woman, citing an ongoing probe. He said the Dare Sheriff's Office believes both people were victims of a heroin overdose.
Duprey said the Dare Narcotics Task Force obtained a warrant for Wise’s arrest on felony charges of sale and delivery of heroin and arrested him. After the man died, the Dare Sheriff’s Office also charged him with second-degree murder.
State law considers second-degree murder as the killing of a person with a reckless disregard for human life.
Wise is being held in the Dare County Detention Facility in lieu of a $550,000 secured bond.
Duprey said no one else has been arrested or is being detained in connection with the two suspected overdosing incidents.
N.C. Public Safety records show Wise has a prior criminal record in Dare. He was convicted in March 2011 of possession with intent to sell illegal drugs and placed on probation.
