A 20-year-old Camden County woman on Tuesday morning was sentenced to 25 years to 31 years in state prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder of a Camden County teen more than two years ago in Elizabeth City.

Morgan Lynn McDonald was scheduled to go on trial today in Pasquotank County Superior Court on a charge of first-degree murder of 18-year-old Summer Faith Waaga. However, McDonald and defense attorney Chrissy Simmons of Dare County reached a plea deal with the state before the trial began.

Judge Cy Grant handed down the sentence, which included credit for 801 days time served in jails in Dare and Pasquotank counties pending the outcome of the case.

A jury of seven men and five women had been chosen Monday to hear the case, with two men to serve as alternates.

Waaga died at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center after being wounded by McDonald in an altercation in the 1000 block of Butlers Lane the morning of March 13, 2016.
