Elizabeth City police said a local motorist was being treated at a Virginia hospital for multiple gunshot wounds on Tuesday a day after he was shot in his vehicle on Massachusetts Avenue.

Darryl Kevin Mullen Jr., 27, of the 300 block of South Dyer Street, was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on Monday, police spokesman Lamont Butts said in a press release. An update on Mullen’s condition was not immediately available Tuesday.

According to Butts, police responded to the 600 block of Massachusetts Avenue shortly before 5:30 p.m. Monday following a report of shots fired.

When they arrived, they found Mullen in a gray 2013 Nissan Sentra vehicle, Butts said. Mullen, the lone occupant in the vehicle, had been struck by multiple gunshots to the upper part of his body, Butts said.

After initial treatment at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Mullen was airlifted to the Virginia hospital, Butts said.

Police said they do not plan to release further details of the incident.

Butts asked anyone with information about Mullen’s shooting to contact police at 335-4321 or the Elizabeth City Crime Line at 335-5555.
