College of The Albemarle has hired a new executive director for the community college’s nonprofit fundraising arm.

COA announced this week that Bonnye Hart had been hired to head the COA Foundation. Hart succeeds Lisa Johnson, the foundation’s previous director who resigned because she was leaving the area.

Hart has 15 years of professional experience with expertise in communications, marketing and customer experience and has held management positions in both the public and private sectors.

According to COA, Hart served as outreach manager in Bangkok, Thailand, at the U.S. Agency for International Development, where she was recognized for excellence in her work across 19 countries in Asia. Hart also managed global communications for the non-profit MTV EXIT (End Exploitation and Trafficking) Foundation, generating more than $5 million in earned media to raise awareness of the organization’s cause.

Most recently Hart led the customer success and digital engagement services division of software company Granicus in Washington, D.C., overseeing more than 4,000 federal, state and local government customers.

“My professional success is directly due to the strong community college foundation I received as an undergraduate,” Hart said in the press release. “I’m honored to partner with area advocates to advance the COA Foundation’s mission to help students in our seven-county service area to access a transformative experience like I had.”

Hart holds both master’s and bachelor’s degrees in mass communications from Texas State University. She and her family previously lived in Elizabeth City 10 years ago. Hart said her family is excited to return to the area.

COA’s Foundation was chartered in 1980 and helps provide student scholarships, new technology, capital projects, program enhancements, and faculty and staff professional development. The executive director oversees COA’s Performing Arts Center, marketing department and the COA Foundation.
