A family law attorney took Elizabeth City City Councilor Gabriel Adkins to court Friday over unpaid legal fees, and won.

A Pasquotank County magistrate ordered Adkins to pay $644 to Lisa Harman-Wakefield, of the Harman Law Firm in Elizabeth City. Harman-Wakefield declined comment on the case Friday. Adkins didn't contest the decision in a phone call.

The dispute stems from Adkins hiring Harman-Wakefield to represent him during his divorce from his now ex-wife, Renee Adkins. Court documents show Harman-Wakefield represented Adkins last fall, representing him through the divorce and child custody and support. That changed in April, when Harman-Wakefield filed to withdraw as his attorney, “on the grounds that plaintiff has not met his financial obligations” to her. After he didn't pay her $625 last month, she filed the small claims action against him.

Adkins said he has paid Harman-Wakefield the majority of her legal fees, or more than $2,000. He also said she continued charging him after he said he no longer needed her services, apparently to wrap up matters with his ex-wife's attorney.

Adkins also said he had asked to pay Harman-Wakefield in installments, but planned to have the matter resolved soon.

Adkins is a small business owner elected to council last year; he represents the Second Ward.
