Wednesday night’s heavy rainfall is being blamed for the discharge of approximately 1,500 gallons of untreated wastewater in Elizabeth City.

City officials said in a press release Friday that the discharge happened at Charles Creek, near the intersection of Parkview Drive and Rivershore Road.

The N.C. Division of Water Quality was notified of the discharge on Thursday and is reviewing the matter, the city said.

The city also said it plans to begin a project within the next 30 days that should alleviate the problem of rain-caused wastewater discharges into Charles Creek.

The city is required under state law to report to the public any waste spill of at least 1,000 gallons that reaches surface waters.
