Music on the Green — Elizabeth City’s popular free summer music series — returns next week for its 10th season.

Each Tuesday for the next eight weeks, area musicians will perform on the lawn at Mariners’ Wharf Park from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Local music lovers are invited to bring a lawn chair or a blanket, sit back and enjoy the show.

Each week the spotlight will be on a different artist and a different genre of music, says Deborah Malenfant, executive director of Elizabeth City Downtown, Inc., the summer music series’ sponsor. Genres will include Americana, reggae, pop, jazz, hip-hop, country, classic rock, southern rock and contemporary.

The series will open, as it traditionally has, with popular performer and former restaurateur Bobby Plough. He will split his set with Holly Luke and Molly Miller, a female guitar duo that goes by the name Holly and Molly.

Other returning artists this summer include The Daniel Jordan Band, Full Deck, Connected, PBNJ and The Band Ryder. New entertainers include Four on the Floor, Dos Gringos and Celestial Destination Entertainment. Celestial Destination Entertainment will be performing at a new event called “Music on the Blue at ECSU,” which is scheduled for Sept. 1 and, unlike the other concerts, will be held on a Saturday during the day at a venue at Elizabeth City State University.

Food and drinks for the Music on the Green concert series will be for sale by American Legion Post 84. A beer garden also will be on site for the first concert on Tuesday. According to Malenfant, organizers are working with City Council to get permission to host the beer garden throughout the concert series.

“What better way to enjoy both music and the wonderful town we live in than to come to these great shows with these amazing performers,” Malenfant said. “We pay them but a paltry amount compared to what they are truly worth. They partner with us because they love to provide this great benefit for their community. How awesome is that?”

For the first time in the music series’ history, ECDI will be partnering with ECSU to co-host a concert on the university campus. Called Music on the Blue at ECSU, the event will be held on the portico of the university Pharmacy Building on Saturday, Sept. 1, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

According to Malenfant, the decision to expand the Music on the Green series to include a concert at ECSU resulted from feedback from university students and from collaboration between herself and Will Broussard, director of corporate and foundation relations at ECSU.

“In deciding on a date, we chose the day of the Viking football season opener,” Malenfant said. “Not only do we want to provide an experience to draw the community to ECSU’s campus, we want to provide a great music experience to those on their way to the game to get them even more revved up to cheer on the team.”

Broussard said he’s excited about the inaugural Music on the Blue event, and hopes ECSU alumni will be too.

“Kicking off Saturday morning with live music on campus as fans prepare for the tailgating, pageantry and excitement of the home opener football game seemed like an excellent touch,” he said.

Broussard added that the Music on the Blue event demonstrates that ECDI, the city and ECSU are looking to find ways to work more closely together.
