CAMDEN — A Camden County surveying firm has joined forces with a Virginia-based engineering and technology company that has an office in Elizabeth City.

Eddie Hyman, of Camden, merged operations with the Timmons Group, of Richmond, at the start of this month following a process that started in June, Timmons Group spokeswoman Leslee Oliver said last week.

Hyman has operated E.T. Hyman Surveying in an office at the Camden Square shopping center, which is just off U.S. Highway 158 in Camden.

The Timmons Group opened an office in the Weatherly Center at City Center West in March. The company offers civil engineering, land planning and surveying services.

Oliver said the merged firm will continue to operate from the Timmons Group’s office at City Center West. Hyman and a survey technician will be joining the company and become Timmons employees, she said.

Oliver said the merger is the result of conversations between Hyman and the Timmons Group while they were working on joint projects. The Timmons Group also was looking to expand surveying services in the region, she said.

The Timmons Group was founded in Richmond in 1953 and has had a presence in North Carolina for 24 years, initially in the Charlotte, Research Triangle and Triad areas.

“As we continue to expand our project portfolio, we saw the need for an Elizabeth City office in order to better serve our clients within the North Carolina eastern region,” Oliver said.

Companywide, Timmons employs more than 500 personnel. In Elizabeth City, the company employs two senior project managers and a civil designer.

The merger with Timmons is the second change for Hyman in the past three years. In July 2015, Hyman and engineer Sean Robey dissolved their 14-year partnership in what had been Hyman and Robey, citing different goals.

Robey formed Eastern Carolina Engineering and Construction, in the former Hyman and Robey building off U.S. 158 near Belcross, and Hyman formed E.T. Hyman Surveying.

The Timmons Group’s Elizabeth City office is at 1805 West City Drive, Unit E, and is open from 8 a.m.to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The phone number is 621-5030.
