An Austin, Texas-based website designed to help borrowers manage and repay their student debt has ranked Elizabeth City State University the most affordable public historically black university in the country.
Student Loan Hero ranked ECSU as the most affordable of the 56 public HBCUs in the nation, ECSU officials said in a press release this week.
ECSU noted the Student Loan Hero ranking was based on tuition costs for the 2017-18 year, before the start of the NC Promise tuition program began this fall. NC Promise offers in-state students at ECSU and two other campuses in the University of North Carolina System — UNC-Pembroke and Western Carolina University — tuition costing $500 per semester. Out-of-state students at all three campuses are being charged only $2,500 per semester for tuition. Student fees, housing and textbooks are an additional cost, ECSU noted.
ECUS officials said NC Promise is expected to allow ECSU to offer “even more affordable tuition, securing its position as the most affordable public HBCU.”
“We’re thrilled to be ranked as the most affordable public HBCU,” said ECSU interim Chancellor Karrie Dixon. “ECSU offers an amazing educational opportunity and the fact that it is affordable in a time when student loan debt has been a struggle is a huge bonus to the young men and women coming here to pursue a degree.”
