Because of the expected inclement weather from Hurricane Florence, the “Mayday Mayday Stop Addiction Now Festival” has been rescheduled to next year, organizer Lisa Creef said Wednesday.

The festival was slated for Saturday, but Creef said organizers canceled it because of the storm. In trying to reschedule the festival, she said the bands and speakers that signed up wouldn’t have been available again until either the winter or spring. Rather than hold the event in the cold, they’re pushing it back to May 4, she said.

“Hopefully we’ll make it even better,” she said. The extra time allows for more promotion and, possibly, more participants, Creef explained.

She said the festival will still be held at the Museum of the Albemarle, and organizers still aim to offer a 5K run that morning.

The festival is intended to “break the silence” and stigma surrounding substance abuse, as well as offer resources to combat addiction. Creef, a social worker and counselor, also encouraged people to continue to follow the festival’s website for updates and information about resources for those facing addiction. The website is mayday4drugfree.com.
