Elizabeth City fire officials suspect arson as the cause of the fire that broke out at a large apartment house just south of downtown earlier this week.

The fire in the four-apartment house at 609 Southern Avenue was reported at 5:17 a.m. Wednesday, Deputy Fire Chief of Administration Barry Overman said. Overman said firefighters had the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes.

Three of the structure’s four apartments were occupied at the time of the fire, but there were no reports of any injuries, Overman said.

The fire damage extended to the exterior siding, porch and entry doors to the house, Overman said.

Officials believe the fire was deliberately set, he said.

According to Central Communications radio traffic, obtained via broadcastify.com, a dispatcher told authorities a caller stated someone had set something on fire at their front door.

Pasquotank County records show the property is listed in the name of Southern-Selden of Elizabeth City and has a tax value of $33,300.
