There’s a tinsel tussle in downtown Elizabeth City, where storefronts are vying to win this year’s Downtown Christmas Window Decorating Contest.

Twenty-six businesses are competing in this year’s event, and voting continues through Dec. 23, according to Deborah Malenfant, director of Elizabeth City Downtown Inc. ECDI and the Downtown Business Professionals Association are co-sponsoring the event.

A walk of downtown shows businesses are making creative use of their storefronts, whether big or small. In the smaller storefront of the former Selig’s Jewelers — a space often used for downtown events — a winter village is nestled into snowy hills, with mirrors used to depict a frozen pond.

Nearby on Main Street, No Limit Fitness is in on the action as well, displaying a giant inflatable Santa, a family of snowmen, and a Christmas tree with gifts.

Tucked into Poindexter Street, the bookstore Footprint Christian Resources has its windows overtaken with wintry weather, with snowflakes and a dash of temporary, white spray paint to give the appearance of frosted-over glass.

Arts of the Albemarle, the reigning downtown Window Decorating Contest champion, has festively filled its storefront as well. Among other displays is a Christmas angel, with a dress draped in Christmas bulb ornaments, who greets passersby. Numerous other works add to the display, including a reindeer, sleigh and other items woven from grapevine. AOA won the contest last year, staff noted.

Other groups and businesses participating in the contest include: Albemarle Floral, Cascade Financial Planning, Cypress Creek Grill, Dockside Spa, the EC Sewing Center, Eclectic Jewelry and Design, Elle Lynn Boutique, Flour Girls Cafe and Bakery, Heather Sawyer United Country, Hoppin’ Johnz, In Stitches Embroidery and Gifts, Island Breeze, Lazzy Frog, Mamoo’s Folk Art, MMT Printers, Overman and Stephenson Pharmacy, Page After Page bookstore, Port Discover, Rachel’s Place, Studio 511, The Bag NC, and The Mills Downtown Bistro.

To vote, pick up ballots at any participating business, and turn them in to the ECDI mailbox at 106 S. Water St. by Dec. 23.
