Steve Baker and his brother John are moving their Elizabeth City-based computer repair business, but it won’t be far.

On Tuesday at noon, the Bakers will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new location of Expert PC. The eight-year-old computer repair business will still be at Ron-E’s Plaza on North Hughes Boulevard. The only difference is they’ll be four doors down at 420 North Hughes.

At Expert PC, the Bakers offer services that include computer repair, mobile phone repair and tablet repair. They also offer tutoring for customers who are still learning all the features of their new phones or tablets as well as instructions on video conferencing and Skype.

Steve Baker believes it’s that type of customer service that separates Expert PC from other repair shops.

“In a small town like this, you don’t have anywhere to service computer systems or cell phones,” he said. “You’d drive an hour in any direction to get that kind of help. It’s nice to have someone local to help you.”

Baker says Expert PC is also “evolving” its business to offer additional services.

“We do maintenance agreements, monitoring, and (sell) protection software for personal computers, and we offer monitoring and backup service for Mac computers,” he said. “We also do electronic game console repairs and TV repairs.”

In the case of a television that’s been damaged from a power surge or the sound has stopped working, Baker said it’s often necessary to determine if parts for the set are still available.

Baker said he’s really proud of the new additions to Expert PC: nearly 400 square feet of Radio Shack products. He says Radio Shack’s recent departure from the former Southgate Mall left several customers wondering if they could find items such as switches, audio cables and batteries.

“We’re an authorized Radio Shack dealer and basically that gives us ability to offer customers their products and offer competitive pricing to some of the items you find online,” he said. “We’ve had some Radio Shack cars and we are looking to stock more of their items.”

Baker said both he and John are graduates of local high schools who also earned associate degrees from College of The Albemarle.

Expert PC is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. On Thursdays, the store is open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
