ECSU renews hangar leases at area airports

Elizabeth City State University plans to continue renting space at area airports to house aircraft as it builds and promotes aviation science as a signature program.

The ECSU Board of Trustees approved the renewal last week of four leases at Elizabeth City Regional Airport and one lease at Northeastern Regional Airport in Edenton. The leases are for a three-year period and have a combined cost of $19,287 a year.

Meanwhile, the university remains committed to seeking a more permanent space to house its fleet, which is now 10 planes.

“We hope one day to have our own hangar,” interim Provost Farrah J. Ward said.

The five leases all begin July 1 and continue through June 30, 2022.

The rate for space at two hangars at Elizabeth City Regional Airport is $200 a month. In addition, the university is renting classroom space at the airport’s terminal facility for $400 a month and a pilot briefing room rents for $157.30 a month.

The rate for hangar space at Northeastern Regional Airport in Edenton is $650 a month.

Asked why the cost of the Edenton lease is significantly higher, Chief Operations Officer Allyn Goodson explained that the space is larger.

University officials also announced during last week’s trustee meetings that ECSU will be moving aviation science into a newer and higher-visibility building on campus.

Chancellor Karrie Dixon in her remarks to the trustees Tuesday noted the aviation science program is moving from Dixon-Patterson Hall to the Pharmacy Complex, which is being repurposed as a STEM complex to house aviation and other programs focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The three-story pharmacy building, constructed in 2010, is one of the campus’s newer structures, and includes 52,500 square feet of classroom, laboratory and office space.

“This is a great opportunity for us to showcase our signature program,” Dixon said of the move.

Dixon said the university also will continue its emphasis on beautification projects over the next few months.
