MOYOCK — A motorcyclist was killed and another motorist was critically injured in a fiery three-vehicle collision on Caratoke Highway in Moyock on Wednesday.

Neither the name of the man riding the motorcycle nor that of the injured motorist were immediately available, law enforcement and emergency medical services personnel said Wednesday evening.

According to Chief Deputy Jeff Walker of the Currituck Sheriff’s Office, the motorcyclist was stopped behind a pickup truck at a red light at the intersection of Caratoke Highway and Moyock Commons Drive about 4:12 p.m. when a southbound SUV, approaching from behind, collided with the rear of the motorcycle.

The impact pushed the motorcycle into the pickup truck and apparently sparked a fire that engulfed both the SUV and the motorcycle, Walker said.

Currituck Fire-EMS Chief Ralph Melton said in a press release that bystanders had already removed the SUV driver from his vehicle when rescue units arrived. Firefighters from the Moyock and Crawford Volunteer fire departments extinguished the fire that completely destroyed both the motorcycle and SUV.

The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene, Melton said.

The driver of the SUV, who was critically injured, was airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Melton said.

The driver of the pickup truck, who sustained minor injuries, was transported by ambulance to Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, Melton said.

The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident. Patrol officials couldn’t be reached Wednesday evening.

Walker said it appears the driver of the SUV did not break in time to avoid colliding with the motorcycle and pickup truck, both of which were stopped at the Caratoke Highway-Moyock Commons intersection. He said witnesses to the accident said the SUV driver appeared to be driving within the speed limit, which is 50 mph where the accident occurred.

Walker said following the accident, law enforcement routed southbound traffic from Caratoke Highway onto Tulls Creek Road.

According to Melton, firefighters from the Chesapeake, Virginia Fire Department also responded to the accident.
