The Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in a car along U.S. Highway 17 North Tuesday evening.

The initial report came from a caller Tuesday at 6:07 p.m., Pasquotank County Sheriff Tommy Wooten said. The caller reported that a small blue car was pulled off the side of the road on U.S. 17 North near Crystal Lake Drive, he said.

A 45-year-old woman was found dead inside the car and the cause of her death was unknown, according to Wooten. The death is still under investigation, he added.

Wooten declined to release the name of the woman, citing the wishes of family members that her name not be released.

In discussing the matter with the sheriff, The Daily Advance noted that the deceased woman’s name is a matter of public record under the state’s Open Records law. The newspaper’s position is informed by conversation with an attorney for the N.C. Press Association.

Wooten nonetheless stood by his decision not to release the woman’s name.

“I will not go against the family’s wishes in releasing the name,” he said.
