Dare principal is new E-Chowan assistant superintendent

EDENTON — The Edenton-Chowan Board of Education has tapped a middle school principal in the Dare County Schools to be the district’s new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

Michael Sasscer, principal at Manteo Middle School, will begin his new duties with Edenton-Chowan on June 20, according to a press release.  

Prior to going to work in Dare County, Sasscer worked in the Currituck County Schools, first as an assistant principal at Currituck High School and later as principal at Jarvisburg Elementary School. He also has worked as an assistant principal at Marvin B. Smith Elementary School in the Alamance-Burlington Schools.

A National Board Certified Teacher and a former North Carolina Teaching Fellow, Sasscer taught high school math, including advanced placement calculus, for 10 years before becoming an administrator. He also is a former varsity and jayvee baseball coach.

Sasscer earned a doctorate in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also holds a master’s degree in school administration and a master of arts in teaching, also from UNC-CH. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics and a bachelor of arts in psychology, also from UNC-CH.

Sasscer was also the valedictorian of his graduating class at Manteo High School.
