Elizabeth City police have arrested and charged a local man with murder in the fatal shooting of another man on Hunter Street last weekend.

Curtis Donnell Brinkley, 38, of the 800 block of Tuscarora Avenue, was arrested Monday and charged with murder in the shooting death of Eric Eugene Johnson Sr. on Saturday.

According to police, officers responded to the 900 block of Hunter Street after receiving a report that a person had been shot. When officers arrived, they found Johnson suffering from a gunshot wound. A police incident report stated Johnson had been shot once in the chest.

Johnson, whose last known address was the 1200 block of Newport Avenue, was transported to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center where he died, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Police identified Brinkley at the time as a person of interest in Johnson’s shooting death but declined to disclose his last known address.

Responding to a tip, detectives with the Elizabeth City Police Department located Brinkley in the Persse Street area Monday afternoon and took him in for questioning, according to a press release from Sgt. Eddie Graham.

Brinkley was later arrested and charged with murder in Johnson’s death, Graham said.

Brinkley is being held at Albemarle District Jail without bond, Graham said. Brinkley’s first court appearance is scheduled for Thursday in Pasquotank District Court.

Graham asked anyone with information about Johnson’s shooting to contact police at 252-335-4321 or the Elizabeth City Crime Line at 252-335-5555.
