An Elizabeth City man is facing felony kidnapping and gun- and assault-related charges after an incident at an apartment complex Sunday.
Jaqual Deshae McCullen, 28, of the 300 block of Bell Street, was arrested Sunday and charged with two felony counts of kidnapping, and one felony count each of discharging a firearm into a dwelling and assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury, according to an arrest report.
Police also charged McCullen with two misdemeanor counts of injury to personal property, and one misdemeanor count each of assault on a female and discharging a firearm within the city limits.
The incident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. at Harbor Bay Town Homes off River Road.
According to police spokeswoman Barbara Morgan, officers responded to a residence at 102 Harbor Bay Drive around 4:46 p.m. on Sunday. Initially, police thought they were responding to someone being shot, she said.
After they arrived, however, they learned McCullen had struck a man in the face with a handgun. They also learned he had fired the gun into an occupied residence.
According to arrest warrants, McCullen is also accused of kidnapping the same man he allegedly struck, and slapping a woman and pulling her hair. He’s also accused of causing an estimated $200 in property damage to the woman’s vehicle and damaging a sliding glass door inside the Harbor Bay residence.
Warrants show the two victims were among a total of four people who were in the residence at the time of the incident.
McCullen was confined at Albemarle District Jail in lieu of a $245,000 secured bond. An online inmate search around 8:30 p.m. Monday indicated McCullen was still in custody.
