local ‘dental drive’
Currituck High School senior Lauren Cutler and junior Marlee Walls, teamed up to organize a community service “dental drive” this month.
Cutler and Walls both have aspirations of attending University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill when they graduate. Lauren, at the time the project idea was conceived, was considering a career in orthodontics. While her career choice may change, she and Marlee wanted to assist students and family members in the community by providing “packets” of dental hygiene products—toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, and mouthwash.
“We felt like this collection drive would be something our fellow students could get behind since individual items aren’t too expensive. Plus, with the dental clinic in the county recently shutting down, we feel like there’s a need in the schools and community,” stated Marlee.
Both donned their best “Christmas Elf” ears and presented more than 150 sparkly, snowflake decorated packages (and several bags of additional items brought into school on the final day of collection) to Currituck Kids, Inc. for distribution. Schools nurses will assist with providing to students and families as part of “Project Smile” and the Mobile Dentist visits at schools.
